Forbes Advisor used data provided by Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison provider, to evaluate 53 insurance policies to find the best travel insurance. If a company had multiple travel insurance plans, we used the plan with the highest score. Some companies may have more benefits or lower prices than the highest-scoring plans, so get a travel insurance quote to see the full range of your options. The benefits scored are:

Cost (25% of score): For a typical traveler profile, we scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for trips to popular destinations in Italy and Mexico.

  • 30-year-old couple travels to Mexico for $3,000
  • 40-year-old couple travels to Italy, costs $6,000
  • $15,000 trip to Italy for family of four
  • 65-year-old couple takes $6,000 trip to Italy
  • 70-year-old couple takes $3,000 trip to Mexico

COVID-19 related medical coverage (10% of score): Points will be awarded if your travel insurance policy includes coverage for coronavirus-related medical expenses.

Medical expenses (10% of score): Travel medical insurance was evaluated based on the amount covered. Travel insurance with travel medical benefits of $250,000 or more per person received the highest points.

Medical evacuation (10% of score): Emergency medical evacuation/evacuation coverage was assessed by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation benefits of $500,000 or more per person received the highest points.

“Cancel for any reason” upgrade (10%): My travel insurance policy earned points if a “cancel for any reason” upgrade was offered. The “Cancel for any reason” upgrade now gives you more points at the 75% refund level.

Waiting time required for baggage delay (5%): Points were awarded for policies with delayed baggage benefits within 12 hours.

Baggage refund benefit (5%): Points were awarded for travel insurance plans with baggage coverage benefits of $2,000 or more per person.

Hurricanes and Weather (5%): Plans received points if the required wait time for hurricane and weather coverage was 12 hours or less.

“Interrupted for any reason” upgrade (5%): Points were awarded for insurance policies that provided an “interruption for any reason” upgrade.

Pre-existing condition exclusion exemption (5%): Points were awarded for insurance that covered pre-existing medical conditions if purchased within the required time frame.

Waiting time required for travel delays (5%): Points were awarded for policies that provided travel delay benefits within six hours.

Trip interruption travel insurance (5%): Points will be awarded if your trip interruption refund is 150% or more.
